Farroba returns to town to teach hoops

A 1971 Provincetown High School graduate is back in town this summer bringing his skills, talent and knowledge to help Provincetown and Truro children play better basketball.
Joe Farroba, currently the head men’s basketball coach at Bridgewater State College, is leading a basketball camp one day a week, 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, for kids 8 to 13 in Provincetown.
He’s working on the basics, fundamental skills, and the kids get to practice those skills in small games, one on one, two on two, three on three, he said.
“I try to really break it down for them,” he said. “The kids work pretty hard, I don’t give them much time off.”
This summer’s camp costs families $75 for 15 hours of time, and each kid got a basketball and a t-shirt with the Bridgewater logo. Some 25 kids participate each week.
Farroba credits School Committee member and parent Deb Trovato with getting the camp going. He said also that he had a lot of good help during the camp from local Provincetown High School basketball players Adam Hobbs and Zach Luster, as well as Recreational Director Dennis Clark and Dorothy Hitchcock.
Farroba said he will be doing the camp again next year and hopes to expand it with a program for high school age kids. And, he said, he’s hoping to bring his college team out to Provincetown to help coach the kids.
He also conducts week-long camps for kids at Bridgewater.
“Provincetown was a good place for me to grow up,” he said. “I’m in a situation where I can give back.”
