Ronald E. Amaral, of Provincetown, died Wednesday morning, July 16, at his home following a long illness.
Born in Boston he was the son of Edward and Doris Amaral. He was a resident of Provincetown most of his life. After graduating from high school in 1955, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Japan. He was discharged in 1959.
He spent most of his working years as a mechanic for Duarte Motors in Provincetown. In 1986 he went to work at Land’s End True Value until he retired due to poor health in 2003.
Besides his family, serving the parishioners of his beloved St. Peter the Apostle Church is where he found the most joy. His activities in his parish were many and varied. He served in the St. Vincent De Paul Society; he was both a Eucharistic minister and a reader at Mass. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Walter Welsh Council of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree member of the Bishop Feeney Assembly.
Among his proudest achievements was being a recipient of the Marian Medal bestowed on him by the bishop of the Fall River Diocese. The Marian Medal is awarded in recognition for outstanding devotion and service to a parish.
Mr. Amaral is survived by his wife, Evelyn A. (Ward), whom he married in 1971; his children, Carolyn Wighte, of Connecticut, Joseph Ward, of Florida, Christopher Ward, of Centerville, Susan Cook, of Mattapoisett, Evelyn Costa and Eileen Grosso, both of Provincetown, Dot Morris, John Ward and Marianne Ward, all of North Truro; his sister, Loretta Alves, of North Truro; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Carol Ann Ward.
Mr. Amaral’s funeral was held last Saturday, the first in the new St. Peter the Apostle Church. If desired, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, 25 Shank Painter Road, Provincetown, MA 02657.
