Richard Alan Oppen, 79

Owner of Bonnie Doone played major league baseball

Richard Alan Oppen, 79, of Clearwater, Fla. died Saturday, July 31, at the Bon Secours Maria Manor in St Petersburg.

He was the husband of the late Barbara Cabral Oppen.

Mr. Oppen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a WWII Naval aviator, earning his pilot wings at Pensacola NAS in Florida.

He graduated from the University of Miami, Coral Gables with a degree in business administration. He also played professional baseball with the Boston Braves.

In 1948 he moved to Provincetown and ran, with his family, the former Bonnie Doone Restaurant on Bradford Street, well known for its Scottish theme and fine cuisine. He and his wife retired in 1986.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Lions Club, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Miami Shores, Fla. and St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Provincetown. He was an avid golfer.

Surviving are his daughters Bonnie Oppen Jordan, Esq. of Clearwater, Fla. and Stacey Oppen Garvey of Queensbury, N.Y.; granddaughters Dr. Joely Vizard Edwards of South Yarmouth and Shannon Garvey and husband Kyle Garvey of Queensbury, N.Y.; grandson Richard Alan Vizard of Arlington, Va.; a brother, David O. Oppen of Pinehurst, N.C. and great-granddaughter Audrey Oppen Vizard of Arlington Va.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, from the McHoul Funeral Home, Harry Kemp Way and Howland Street, Provincetown. A funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St Peter the Apostle Church, Prince Street, Provincetown. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visiting Hours at the funeral home were scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, with Vigil Prayers at 6:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend.
